Wong Kar Wai calendar project

Wong Kar Wai is one of my all-time favorite film writer/directors. His iconic style and story-telling methods, together with a flair for the melodramatic, have resulted in some amazing films: Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love and Happy Together, to name a few. (Happy Together is my forever obsession.)

A few years ago I participated in a web project to create desktop calendars based off of themes and motifs from his films. I still love the resulting images.

I’ve been doing graphic design in some form or another (bad, good, a bit better) for nigh on ten years. During this time I have never established a personal brand or had a real portfolio website. Or business cards for that matter.

It was not for lack of trying. I designed and redesigned logo, portfolio layout and website at least a dozen times over the last several years, each incarnation irritating me more than the last – enough so that I eventually gave up. But now I am 30 and in the midst of an existential crisis, so it was time.

This logo and ensuing personal “brand” will not win awards or gain me any sort of celebrated professional recognition. But it will, with certainty, help me to accomplish one thing: get my shit up on the Internet.

Big thanks to the (probably award winning) people at The League of Moveable Type for their truly hot and sexy sans serif, Ostrich Sans. I literally said aloud, “YES!” when I saw it. Thanks to you guys for getting your shit up on the Internet so people like me can be inspired to do the same.
